Under The Volcano
Under The Volcano by Malcolm Lowry (1947) - A bottomless fall into alcohol, rendered in gorgeous, spellbinding prose. A simplistic explanation of a complex work.

Under The Volcano
Under The Volcano by Malcolm Lowry (1947) - A bottomless fall into alcohol, rendered in gorgeous, spellbinding prose. A simplistic explanation of a complex work.
Dust Bowl Ballads
Dust Bowl Ballads by Woody Guthrie (Victor/1940) - A folk-rock concept album 30 years ahead of its time, though perfectly of its own time as well. Woody uses the phrase rockin’ and rollin’ in one song. Huh.
Lady Bird b/w Sand
Lady Bird b/w Sand by Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood (Reprise/1967) - Two more divinely odd sides from this divinely matched duo. A whole lot of sexual metaphor and longing in both songs, and langourously shifting arrangements to keep you guessing. It’s a hit.
Venus b/w Hot Sand
Venus b/w Hot Sand by The Shocking Blue (Colossus/1969) - Really a pretty bitchen tune when heard in its original format. Nice driving acoustic rhythm guitar (is it acoustic, or clean electric?), with crunchy electric guitar and keyboard. And Mariska Veres’ vocals deliver those lyrics on the money: “Goddess on a mountain top…” Beat that. Flipside ain’t bad, either.
Baby It’s You b/w The Things I Want To Hear (Pretty Words)
Baby It’s You b/w The Things I Want To Hear (Pretty Words) by The Shirelles (Scepter/1961) - A girl group classic, one of Burt Bacharach earliest hit arrangements. Yes, that’s him you hear, getting in a sha-la-la at the beginning of the song.
Silhouettes b/w Daddy Cool
Silhouettes b/w Daddy Cool by The Rays (Cameo/1957) - Vocal group ballad with comic twist plot point on top. Up tempo rhythm ‘n’ blues on the over. A solid and genuine slice of the fifties.
Which Way You Goin’ Billy? b/w Endless Sleep
Which Way You Goin’ Billy? b/w Endless Sleep by The Poppy Family (London/1970) - Sad, dark-hearted pop with terrifically yearning lead vocal by Susan Jacks. Yeah, Terry Jacks went on to financial security with Seasons In The Sun.
Town Without Pity b/w Air Mail Special Delivery
Town Without Pity b/w Air Mail Special Delivery by Gene Pitney (Musicor/1961) - A ballad and a popper. David Lynch really should use Mr. Pitney on a film soundtrack, if he hasn’t already.

Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas: A Savage Journey To The Heart Of The American Dream by Hunter S. Thompson (1971) - It’s been a couple of decades since I last read this one, but it still rocks, rattles and resonates. A brutal, sloppy tongued kiss-off to the 1960s counterculture.
August 13, 2008...no commentsHumor, Horror And The Supernatural: 22 Stories by Saki by H.H. Munro aka Saki (1951) - Tightly compact stories of puckish wit with a touch of the macabre. Bedtime stories for the Addams household.
August 4, 2008...no commentsHiding The Elephant: How Magicians Invented The Impossible And Learned To Disappear by Jim Steinmeyer (2003) - Tracing the evolution of one branch of effects, Steinmeyer takes us on an elegantly digressive tour of magic’s golden age — from the latter 19th century to the 1930s. Nicely written with a personal voice.
August 4, 2008...no commentsJ.S. Bach: Cello Suites Nos. 1-6 by Pablo Casals (Naxos/2000) - Vivid 1920s and 30s recordings of Bach’s cello suites by the artist who brought them into the modern performance repertoire. Intense performances and rather nice sound quality.
July 4, 2008...no commentsStrummin’ Mental, Parts One and Two by various artists (Crypt/199?) - Two separate CDs of joyfully obscure late 1950s to mid-1960s rock instrumentals. This batch does cover the fabled twang ‘n’ surf era with 32 sides a piece, waxed by unknown American kids gone mad with the power of electric guitars. Points off for zero information on the bands or tunes.
June 1, 2008...no commentsEverything You Always Wanted To Know About 60’s Mind Expansive Punkadelic Garage Rock Instrumentals But Were Afraid To Ask by various artists (Arf! Arf!/1993) - Another fully loaded Arf! Arf! comp. This one is filled with rock instrumentals. But rather than covering the usual twang ‘n’ surf era, this covers the mid to late-60s fuzz ‘n’ wah era. The smelly full flowering of psych, the earthy roots of metal and prog to come. Obscure, amazing and fun.
